Introduction
The Program in History and Philosophy of Science
at Seoul National University was founded in
1984 to provide graduate training in the history
of science and the philosophy of science.
The program offers courses in both disciplines,
enabling students to pursue both master's
and doctoral training.
It encourages students to take advantage of opportunities for interdisciplinary
work in other departments of the university.
The oldest and largest of its kind in the
country, the program has become a vigorous
center of teaching and research in the field,
with a growing international reputation. It
has produced 87 master's degrees and 22 doctoral
degrees so far, and currently has approximately
25 students working for a master's degree
and about 22 for a doctoral degree.
Graduates of the program obtain work in such
varied fields as journalism, government, research
institutes, publishing, and industry, as well
as the academic world. Research

discipline devoted to using historical and
philosophical approaches to understand one
of the most important conceptual and cultural
enterprises of the modern world ¡ª science.
